38.   Medical, surgical, ophthalmic and dental

  1.  

    (1)   Medical, surgical, ophthalmic and dental treatment shall be administered to a member of the Fire Service in accordance with the following regulation—

      (a)     free medicines and supplies. All medicines, supplies or articles prescribed by the appropriate district medical officer in the course of his or her treatment of Fire Officers shall be supplied from the dispensary of the Victoria Hospital or the district dispensary free of charge. If these medicines or supplies are not available at the aforementioned places they may be obtained from private chemists and the cost shall be borne by Government.

    In the prescribing of free medicines and supplies the district medical officer shall prescribe only these medicines, supplies or articles which in his or her opinion are absolutely necessary for the treatment of the member of the Fire Service concerned;

      (b)     free admittance to hospital. All station officers, subordinate officers and fire fighters shall be admitted to hospital free of charge;

      (c)     free dental treatment. All members of the Fire Service shall be provided with free dental treatment in respect of extraction. In the case of other dental treatment 50% of the costs shall be borne by Government.

    However, where such treatment involves the replacement of dentures such replacement shall be limited to plain dentures without any jackets of gold or any other material, use for the purpose of such jacket;

      (d)     ophthalmic treatment. District medical officers shall recommend all members of the Fire Service complaining of an eye disease to be sent to a Government eye specialist for consultation and treatment the cost of which shall be borne by Government;

      (e)     free spectacles. Members of the Fire Service with and over 15 years service shall on the prescription of Government eye specialist be supplied with spectacles, the cost of which shall be borne by Government.

    However, where a member of the Fire Service requests frames of a more expensive type than those normally supplied he or she shall be required to pay the difference in cost.

    (2)   All medical, surgical and ophthalmic treatment shall be limited to such treatment as is available in the State, however, when any such treatment is not available in the State the medical, surgical or ophthalmic treatment on the advice of the Chief Medical Officer and with the approval of the Cabinet may be obtained outside the State at the expense of the Government.
