3.   Licence plates

  1.  

    (1)   The Licensing Authority may assign distinct letters for use on licence plates with respect to different classes and categories of motor vehicles, including motor vehicles owned by the Government of Saint Lucia and motor vehicles which by virtue of any concession granted by the Government are to be used within specified areas of Saint Lucia.

    (2)   The licence plate to be carried by a registered motor vehicle or trailer under section 10 of the Act shall consist of 2 plates, which must conform as a size, lettering, numbering and otherwise, with the specifications set out in PART I of the Schedule but vehicles owned by all resident foreign diplomatic personnel shall in so far as lettering is concerned, contain the letters marked “CD” on the 2 plates.

    (3)   Letters and numbers assigned to a motor vehicle or trailer may be painted on or otherwise fixed to the motor vehicle or trailer and may be used instead of plates; and any reference to plates in these Regulations shall be construed to include a reference to numbers and letters so painted or fixed, and any reference to the fixing of plates to include delineation of the numbers and letters.

    (4)   In addition to the number and any other identification as reference to the numbers and letters so painted of fixed or other mark assigned to any public service vehicle or commercial vehicle such vehicle shall also have the index mark containing one or more capital letters of the alphabet, as may be determined by the Licensing Authority, as part of its identification either placed on the left hand side or above the number and such index mark shall be of the dimensions prescribed for figures on the licence plate.

    (5)   Sub-regulations (1) to (4) which relate to the fixing and illumination of licence plates shall apply to the plates forming the general licence plates as they apply to the plates forming other licence plates.

    (6)   The Licensing Authority shall require the words “LEFT HAND DRIVE” to be affixed or painted on the licence plate, or elsewhere as it determines, of all motor vehicles that are left hand drive vehicles.

    (7)   A personalised licence plate shall bear upon it letters and numbers approved by the Licensing Authority which may consist of —

    1.  

      (a)     in the case of a private motor vehicle, a combination of 2 to 8 letters and numbers; and

    1.  

      (b)     in the case of a private motor cycle, a combination of 2 to 5 letters and numbers.
