12.   Inquest out of jurisdiction

  1.

    (1)   If it appears to a coroner that, in case of a body lying within his or her district, an inquest ought to be held into the death but it is expedient that the inquest should be held by some other coroner, he or she may request another coroner to assume jurisdiction and to hold the inquest and that other coroner shall then have jurisdiction to hold the inquest.

  1.

    (2)   Where jurisdiction to hold an inquest is assumed under this section, it shall not be necessary to remove the body into the district of the coroner who is to hold the inquest.

  1.

    (3)   On the assumption of jurisdiction to hold an inquest under this section, the coroner shall also assume in relation to the body, all the powers and duties which would belong to him or her if the body were lying within his or her district and may exercise those powers although the body remains outside his or her district or, having been removed into it, is removed out of it by virtue of any order of his or hers for its examination or burial.

  1.

    (4)   A coroner who requests another coroner to hold an inquest shall cease to have any powers or duties in relation to the body or the inquest although the body remains within his or her district or comes to be buried there.
