Revised Laws of Saint Lucia (2021)

5.   Mode of dealing with leper wandering about begging, etc.

  1.

    (1)   It is lawful for a magistrate, on information on oath that any person reasonably suspected of being a leper has been wandering about begging or collecting alms in any public place, or exposing his or her leprosy in any public place, to summon the leper to appear before him or her or any other magistrate, or to issue a warrant under his or her hand directed to any peace officer and authorising him or her to cause the leper to be brought before him or her or any other magistrate, at a time and place to be specified in the summons or warrant, to be dealt with as hereinafter in this section provided.

  1.

    (2)   When the suspected leper is brought before a magistrate, if it is proved to the satisfaction of the magistrate that the suspected leper is a leper and it is made further to appear, upon the oath of some credible witness, that the leper has been seen wandering about begging or collecting alms in any public place, or exposing his or her leprosy in any public place, then it is lawful for the magistrate by warrant under his or her hand to order the detention of the leper in a leper asylum until he or she is discharged by order of the Governor General.
