INMATES

  1.  

    1.   The inmates shall conduct themselves in a quiet and orderly manner, and obey at all times the directions of the Medical Superintendent and the steward.

  1.  

    2.   They shall unless disabled by illness, rise at 6:00 a.m. and arrange their beds, remove their chamber utensils and wash and clean themselves before 7:00 a.m. They shall keep the vicinity of their beds (including their boxes and shelves) clean.

    3.   They shall retire to bed at 8:00 p.m. when all lights shall be extinguished except such lights as may be authorised to be kept burning during the night.

    4.   The inmates are forbidden to injure, destroy, or sell clothing, bedding, food or any other property of the Government.

    5.   They shall not raise pigs or other animals for the purpose of selling them (fowls for use in the asylum excepted.)

  1.  

    6.   All inmates who are well enough are required to do such work for the benefit of the asylum as the steward with the approval of the Medical Superintendent may direct, which work shall be performed under the direct supervision of the steward.

  1.  

    7.   Tobacco and alcoholic drinks shall only be issued to well-conducted inmates and by order of the Medical Superintendent. No such articles shall be brought into the asylum without his or her sanction.

    8.   The male inmates are forbidden to enter the wards or grounds of the female inmates, and the latter are forbidden to enter the premises of the male inmates.

    9.   Any inmate leaving the asylum without a pass from the Medical Superintendent, will be treated as having escaped, and may be arrested and returned to the asylum by any police officer, or by any officer or servant of the asylum.

    10.   Inmates may receive visits from their friends on Sundays from 10:00 a.m. to 12:00 noon and from 2:00 p.m. to 4:00 p.m. and in special cases at other times with the permission of the Medical Superintendent.

    11.   Any inmate who—

    1.  

      (a)     assaults, or in any way molests, or uses abusive or insulting words or gestures to any one in authority or to any other inmate; or

    1.  

      (b)     wilfully disobeys any lawful or reasonable order given to him or her by any officer of the Asylum; or

    1.  

      (c)     introduces into the Asylum or has in his or her possession therein anything prohibited by the Medical Superintendent; or

    1.  

      (d)     is found gambling in the Asylum,

  1.  

    commits an offence. On conviction of the offence under (3) above, the prohibited article may be confiscated.

    12.   Every inmate who contravenes any of the provisions of these Regulations is liable to any or such of the punishments prescribed by section 24(2) of the Lepers Act as the Medical Superintendent may order or direct.

NOTE—

Punishment for Contravention of Regulations

All or any of the following—

Reduction of diet for not longer than 7 days.

  1.  

    Change of diet.

  1.  

    Extra employment.

  1.  

    Prohibition of receiving visits from relatives and friends.

  1.  

    Deprivation of tobacco.

  1.  

    Solitary confinement for not longer than 3 days.
