18.   Provisions with regard to slaughter

  1.  

    (1)   A person shall not slaughter or cause to be slaughtered in any place any bull, cow, ox, steer, heifer, calf, ram, ewe, sheep, lamb, goat or kid or any swine without first having obtained from a justice of the peace, a police officer, a rural constable or designated officer a permit in Form I of the Schedule.

    (2)   A person who slaughters or causes to be slaughtered in any place any bull, cow, ox, steer, heifer, calf, ram, ewe, sheep, lamb, goat or kid or any swine is bound to keep the skin of such animal for 6 days after such animal is slaughtered.

    (3)   A person slaughtering or causing to be slaughtered in any place any such animal mentioned in this section shall be bound within the said 6 days to produce the skin of such animal to any police officer, rural constable or designated officer who shall request to see the same.

    (4)   A person who slaughters or causes to be slaughtered in any place, any bull, cow, ox, steer, heifer, calf, ram, ewe, sheep, lamb, goat or kid or any swine—

    1.  

      (a)     without having obtained such permit;

    1.  

      (b)     fails or neglects to produce such permit relating to such animal to any police officer, rural constable or designated officer who may request to see the same;

    1.  

      (c)     fails or neglects to keep, or cause to be kept the skin of such animal; or

    1.  

      (d)     fails or neglects to produce the skin relating to any such animal to any police officer, rural constable, or designated officer, who may request to see the same,

    commits an offence and is liable on summary conviction to a fine not exceeding $250. (Substituted by Act 15 of 1977)
