8.   Breach of certain conditions of licence, and punishment

If any licence-holder fails to comply with any of the requirements of section 6, he or she in every such case, unless he or she proves, to the satisfaction of the court, before which he or she is tried, that he or she did his or her best to act in conformity with the law, commits an offence under this Act, and on his or her being convicted thereof, his or her licence may, in the discretion of the court, be forfeited or, if the original term of imprisonment in respect of which his or her licence was granted has expired at the date of his or her conviction, it is lawful for the court to sentence him or her to imprisonment, with, or without hard labour, for any term not exceeding one year, or if the said original term has not expired, but the unexpired remainder thereof is a lesser period than one year then, in addition to the forfeiture of his or her licence, to sentence him or her to imprisonment, with or without hard labour, to commence at the expiration of the said original term of imprisonment, for such a time as together with the unexpired remainder of his or her said original term of imprisonment, will not exceed one year.
