6.   Registers of Civil Status

  1.  

    (1)   The Registers of Civil Status include the following:

    1.  

      (a)     a register of births;

    1.  

      (b)     a register of marriages;

    1.  

      (c)     a register of deaths;

    1.  

      (d)     a register of burials;

    1.  

      (e)     a register of baptisms or dedications; and

    1.  

      (f)     a register of adoptions.

    (2)   The Registers of Civil Status must be in the form prescribed and must be kept in triplicate as follows —

    1.  

      (a)     two copies of each Register of Civil Status must be kept at the office of the Registrar as follows:

      1.  

        (i)     one copy comprising all handwritten documents,

      1.  

        (ii)     one electronic record; and

    1.  

      (b)     one copy which may be electronic or otherwise kept in a place other than at the office of the Registrar.

    (3)   Where there is a variance between the handwritten copies of the Register of Civil Status and the electronic record, the copy comprising the handwritten documents prevails.

    (4)   A District Registrar shall sign the handwritten copies of the records of civil status except the records of adoption which the Registrar shall sign.

    (5)   The Minister responsible for civil status may, by Order published in the Gazette, set a date on which a depositary shall not be required to deposit records of baptisms or dedications or records of burials with the Registrar. (Inserted by Act 10 of 2014)
