4.   Registrar, Assistant Registrars, Civil Status Assistants

  1.  

    (1)   There shall be —

    1.  

      (a)     a Registrar of Civil Status;

    1.  

      (b)     Deputy Registrars of Civil Status; and

    1.  

      (c)     Assistant Registrars of Civil Status;

  1.  

       appointed by the Judicial and Legal Services Commission.

       (Substituted by Act 10 of 2014)

  1.  

    (2)   There shall be one or more Civil Status Assistants appointed by the Public Service Commission.

  1.  

    (3)   The Minister may by Regulations prescribe the qualifications of Civil Status Assistants.

  1.  

    (4)   The Registrar shall be the chief civil status officer and shall be responsible for—

    1.  

      (a)     drawing up and altering records of civil status;

    1.  

      (b)     keeping and maintaining records of civil status;

    1.  

      (c)     the custody of the Registers of Civil Status;

    1.  

      (d)     providing access to the Register of Civil Status; and

    1.  

      (e)     the renewal of the worn out Registers of Civil Status.

  1.  

    (5)   The Assistant Registrars and any other person authorized in writing by the Registrar shall perform the duties and have the powers conferred by this Act on the Registrar and delegated to them by the Registrar by instrument in writing.

    (6)   Where the position of Registrar is vacant, the Registrar of the High Court who is appointed under the Supreme Court Act, may perform the duties of the Registrar under this Act. (Inserted by Act 10 of 2014)
